C2K Newsdesk Literacy Activity for 9-12 year olds.

3rd Mar 2021

Opportunities for Primary schools to take part in a range of activities led through stories by local authors.

Local Irish children's authors have created a series of unfinished short stories for our 9 - 12 year-olds under the theme of Too Much Too Young. These stories will each tackle a problematic life issue that children may have had to deal with at a young age - such as difficulty making friends, bullying, lack of self-confidence and coming to terms with autism.

Each of the short stories will end with the central character having to decide on what course of action to take to improve or resolve their situation - and that's where our pupils and their teachers take over.

Every story will be accompanied by a wide range of different discussion, writing and creative activities that the pupils can take part in during class or through online platforms such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams or Seesaw.

The first story in this series will be launched on the Newsdesk on World Book Day. Keeping Mum is set in Derry and is written by author, journalist and broadcaster Dominic Kearney. It features a young girl who has become a carer for her mother.

We are sure pupils will find the tales engaging, relatable, moving, thought-provoking - and at times humorous - and will provide teachers with an opportunity to use these specially written short stories as a springboard for inspiring Literacy, PDMU and creative work.

Look out for this first video 'Keeping Mum' tomorrow on Newsdesk.
